PlayStation Messages: New Messenger for PSN Users Review

Our intention is to make the most of each app review. No matter which platform you use, our reviews are relevant. We check the app's usability comprehensively, devoting from 15 to 24 hours to the issue.

PlayStation Messages is a free messenger app for communication of PS3, PS4, and PS Vita users. You can use it to check the status of your PlayStation Network friends and chat with them. The new Messages app allows you to send instant voice messages and funny stickers as well. You can download PlayStation Messages for your iOS and Android devices.

Functionality 4/5

PlayStation Messages app allows you to see whether your PSN friends are online and send them messages even if you are away from your console. You can text, record voice messages, and attach stickers. Unfortunately, there is no way to send photos from the camera roll or take live photos. You also can’t add new friends via PlayStation Messages latest version. Hopefully, developers add this crucial function soon.

Design 5/5

PlayStation Messages predecessor, PlayStation app was a cluttered mess. Developers finally changed it and made the design of their new app similar to such popular apps as Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp. There browsing bar at the bottom includes taps for fast access to Messages, Favourites, Friends, and Settings.

Usability 4/5

PlayStation Messages free app messaging features are rather limited, though there is no alternative for PSN users. It allows you to quickly check the online status of all your friend by scrolling the list in the Friends tab. All contacts are listed in alphabetical order. You can go to Settings and adjust the app to lift all online users to the top.

To write a message, you have to tap on a user or go to the Messager tab. The strange thing that popped-up during the test for this PlayStation Messages review is that you can’t check PSN-profiles of your friends. For this purpose, PSM automatically switches to the old application. It’s a very cluttered operation.

If you doubt about the necessity to install PlayStation Messages, try to compare their performance. The average response time of the new app is multiple times shorter. It lacks some features, but it’s much better than the original variant anyway.

Cross-platform use 4.5/5

This app is available for all iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. No matter what OS you prefer, you can message users of both variants. You can also use your PSN account to access the network from any web-browser.

In-app purchases

PlayStation Messages free download is available for all PSN subscribers. All features of the app don’t charge additional fees. PSM is also friendly to your bandwidth. It consumes a tiny amount of traffic per month.

The Bottom Line

PlayStation Messages is a must-have app for all active members of the PSN community. It’s a unique tool to have conversations with PlayStation users only, so don’t worry about quarrels between PC gamers and PS fans. It’s just a cozy place for friendly communication and checking out who’s playing at the moment.
