Yahoo App Review Review
While now the most influent search system is obviously Google, there has been a Yahoo! time in a dino era. But still Yahoo! is known for some services; it’s Flickr, it’s mail and messenger services, and, of course, a news aggregator. Yahoo! News app is a kind of magazine in your phone that provides fresh news constantly.
The developers have put all mail or messaging services apart, so the basic Yahoo! app is all about the news.
It’s a classical news digest made by Yahoo!, so you won’t have to scroll through different sources to read all the news you’re interested in. The digest is organized in sections (Politics, Economy, Sports, Science and so on) that contain materials on that topic. Before opening the whole article you can read its summary (or rather a teaser) that indicates whether the article is worth reading.
Global updates come twice a day, so hardly you can miss something important. And there must be urgent manual updates for breaking news.
On having read an article you can continue browsing related topics following the links and teasers on the bottom; the scheme you must have seen on many news sites.
You can subscribe to the feeds (vibes, as Yahoo! calls them) you’re interested in, so your own journal will be fully devoted to your interests.
The recommendations have got local recently. If you’re interested in what’s happening around you, you can see your area news in the app and even subscribe to your local feed.
The app is interactive. Your Yahoo! ID lets you post comments or react to the news you read. That’s the way the news gets social. If you don’t want to reveal your real self-connected opinion, you can use an alias by editing your data in the profile section.
Twitter integration is an important part of the app. Under any article, you can find a series of tweets by the persons mentioned above. You can scroll this ribbon horizontally to read more tweets and open them in your Twitter app to react or mark as favorites.
The app has been designed to be readable. So what we see is a big picture, a large headline and readable text below. The article takes as much space on your phone screen as it can. So you have it ready for reading.
Text size is easily adjustable. You can fit as much text as you can by selecting the smallest font, or ease the reading process with the biggest letters. The switching button is always visible in the right upper corner.
It’s easy to scroll through articles, switch to other news pieces, change categories or sources. You only need to swipe horizontally to switch between articles within one vibe.
The app looks great both on smartphones and on tablets, making the most use out of each pixel on the screen.
If you have used at least one app of this kind, you will feel familiar with Yahoo! And even if it’s your first news aggregator, it won’t take long to figure out how to use it.
And there’s another annoying thing: in most countries, this app is not available officially, so its inhabitants willing to have the app have to search for it in third-party sources or change their current country to get the access. Yes, it’s American news after all. But it often happens that American news echoes globally, and we don’t mean crucial events like POTUS election. So no wonder that people from other countries would like to read this app. Yes, it takes a lot of efforts to localize the app for other language speakers, but why not make at least an English version of this app available worldwide?
Yes, there is an international edition, but it also goes out to English-speaking countries mostly: US, UK. Canada or worldwide, still focused on the regions mentioned. Well, we must keep in mind that Yahoo is no Google, it’s a local player, though a strong one in its area. Non-English speaking countries’ residents may find a better analog in their own language and focused on their area.
But if you still want news from Yahoo, download app named Yahoo News Digest.
Cross-platform use 8/10
Yahoo! download is available for Android and iOS.
None. The app is completely free, like other Yahoo services. They have sideways for monetizing their projects. To our greater pleasure? Not always so, as we have seen the news not as neutral politically as we’d wish. But if you take this light propaganda with a pinch of salt, then it’s alright.
The idea of the news app made for home market of US is great, and Yahoo uses all its aggregating power to make it right. USA inhabitants will make the most use out of it.
A good news aggregator, sometimes promoting Yahoo’s point of view, but still full of actual news and with social media integration.
Pros : Many sources integrated into one app via Yahoo!;
Easy and clean design;
Commenting and sharing news is easy;
Twitter integration adds FPV to the news and makes them more interactive.
Cons : Not available outside the US (you have to install Yahoo News Digest instead);
Not localized into other languages;
Sometimes the opinions in promoted articles are too biased left (as some users note).
Cross-platform use 4.0
